The Cypriot Greek is the dialect of Greek spoken by the majority of the Cypriot population and Greek Cypriot diaspora. The Greek Cypriot dialect has preserved many elements of the ancient Greek language. However, because Cyprus was cut off from the rest of the Greek-speaking world from the 7th to the 10th century AD due to Arab attacks and from 1191 AD when it fell to the hands of the Crusaders. These periods of isolation under the influence of the languages of the many colonisers of the island led to the development of various linguistic characteristics distinct from standard Modern Greek. Greek – Cypriot dialect has developed some different characteristics in phonology, morphology and vocabulary.

We have to underline that after the completion of this course you can’t take any exams in Greek Cypriot as the official language in Cyprus is Modern Greek.
